Safe & Healthy Housing Assessments & Home Repairs

Did you know your zip code can be a better predictor of health than your genetics? Hinton Center wants to see our entire community’s health and safety improve, so there are no financial requirements for having us do a Safe & Healthy Housing check at your home! We offer the home assessment and repairs to residents of Clay, Cherokee, and Towns counties.

For Hinton to do repairs and/or address other safety and mobility issues at your home, such as installing smoke detectors or building an accessibility ramp, there must be financial need or extenuating circumstances.

To get started, download, print, and read both pages of our Safe & Healthy Housing Assessment form linked here:  Safe & Healthy Housing Assessment Information. Next, click on the Safe & Healthy Home Repair online application linked here, complete, and submit: Online Application. You can also download the application HERE and mail or bring it to Hinton Center at 2330 Hinton Center Road, Hayesville, NC 28904. Questions? Email missions@hintoncenter.org .

Employment

Summer Missions Service Ministry Leader

PAID SUMMER MISSIONS LEADERSHIP POSITION: Service Ministry Leaders (SMLs) are passionate about living out their Christian faith, building relationships with others, and leading teams of volunteers. They help oversee youth and adults on the home repair worksites and during scheduled programming for the 10 weeks of Summer Mission Outreach. Other responsibilities include: leading devotionals and activities; participating in worship; assisting with Hinton’s daily campus operations; and building covenant relationships with other staff, volunteers, and neighbors. The SML position is a paid summer position through Hinton Center’s summer mission outreach program, a person-first ministry that provides safe and healthy home repairs for community members who are low income, older adults, and/or living with a disability. Programming is centered around encouraging volunteers to consider their perspective and approach to serving. The position is fun and rewarding, but also emotionally and physically demanding. The work week is Sunday afternoon through Thursday evening.

We’re looking for college-age individuals with leadership capability and a desire to grow in those skills. Unlike a traditional camp counselor role, the SML position entails more than engaging in activities with youth. It is coming alongside them to encourage, equip, and educate. (Each group comes with adults who are responsible for their youth.) SMLs are required to live on campus, in separate accommodations from the mission teams, generally with roommates. Housing and most meals are provided. For more details, including requirements and responsibilities, click HERE.

Application Process:

  1. Open until filled. Complete online application. https://forms.gle/b8kDfvaNUuoWJMEZ7
  2. Conduct a Zoom interview with Hinton Center’s Service Ministry Leader hiring team in early March.
  3. Service Ministry Leaders will be notified by mid-March.
  4. Training begins the week of May 12, 2025, with remote training followed by on-site training. The Summer Missions Outreach ministry ends August 1, 2025. (Time off during the summer can be requested, but must be approved by supervisor in advance.)
